Five of Pentacles Tarot Card Meaning
- Element:
- Earth
- Astrology:
- Mercury in Taurus
- Number:
- 5
Overview & symbolism
Snow falls on two figures passing beneath a glowing stained-glass window set with five pentacles in a tree of light. One walks on crutches, bell at his neck; the other clutches a shawl, barefoot in the drifts. No door is drawn in the frame — the card shows exactly what the travellers see, which is the exclusion and not the entrance. The entrance, every reader of the card knows, is around the corner they haven't turned.
Upright meaning
- hardship
- feeling shut out
- financial strain
- isolation
- the unseen refuge
The Five of Pentacles is the suit of security with the security removed. Two figures move through snow past a lit church window — one on crutches, one bare-shouldered — and neither looks at the light. Upright, the card names material hardship honestly: money trouble, lost work, health knocked out from under, the cold season when the world seems built for people other than you. But its sharpest observation is about exclusion's psychology: the window glows, the sanctuary has a door, and the travellers walk past it — because feeling shut out and being shut out are different facts, and suffering tends to blur them exactly when clarity matters most.
Reversed meaning
- recovery
- help accepted
- the door found
- worst passing
- poverty of spirit ending
Reversed, the cold snap breaks. Work returns, help arrives, health steadies — or, most often first, the inner weather shifts: the aid that pride had been refusing gets accepted, and the door that was always there gets knocked on. The reflective work while warming up is gentle but real: what kept you outside longest — the circumstances, or the certainty that the light wasn't for you?
Five of Pentacles in Love
Upright: Hard weather shared — or endured in parallel isolation two feet apart. Hardship tests bonds mainly by testing whether partners turn toward each other; turn.
Reversed: The season easing as burdens finally get spoken — warmth returning when the struggle stops being carried solo.
Five of Pentacles in Career
Upright: Professional winter — loss, insecurity, or the outsider feeling at full strength. Keep walking, but check the actual doors: networks, benefits, people who would help if asked.
Reversed: Re-entry beginning — the interview, the retraining, the ask that pride postponed. Recovery compounds once it starts.
Five of Pentacles in Money
Upright: The strain card — genuine shortage or the fear-of-shortage that behaves identically. Triage honestly, and claim every support that exists; using help is what help is for.
Reversed: The numbers turning — debt shrinking, income restarting, assistance in place. Rebuild the buffer before rebuilding the lifestyle.
Five of Pentacles in Health
Upright: Illness or depletion carried as if it disqualified you from care — the crutch and the cold together. Support exists; the walking-past is optional. Reflective only, not medical advice.
Reversed: Recovery underway, often dated precisely from the day help was accepted. Reflective only, not medical advice.
Five of Pentacles in Spirituality
Upright: The stained-glass paradox — feeling exiled from exactly the comfort that was built for the exiled. The sanctuary's whole purpose is people in your condition.
Reversed: Coming in from the cold — practice or community re-entered, and the discovery that the door was unlocked throughout.
Five of Pentacles in Shadow work
Upright: Meeting the outsider self — the identity built around exclusion, which keeps walking past open doors to stay consistent.
Reversed: The pride shadow yielding: letting yourself be helped without repaying in shame. Receiving is a skill; practise it.
As advice
Look up — the window is lit and the door is real. Ask for the help, claim the support, accept the shelter. Walking proudly past sanctuary is not resilience; it is just a longer winter.
Yes or No?
no. The Five of Pentacles is a no for now — resources and conditions are against the question as posed; seek support and shelter first, then re-ask.
Card combinations
With the Four of Pentacles, fear and its fulfilment — hoarding upstream of the loss it dreaded. With the Six of Pentacles, the door found: help flowing, dignity intact. With The Star, the inner thaw — hope restored before the finances catch up, which is the usual order.
