Six of Pentacles Tarot Card Meaning
- Element:
- Earth
- Astrology:
- Moon in Taurus
- Number:
- 6
Overview & symbolism
A richly dressed merchant holds balanced scales in one hand while the other drops coins into a kneeling beggar's palms; a second figure kneels waiting. The scales hover level over the one still empty-handed — judgment and generosity in the same gesture. The card quietly asks which figure you are today, and remembers that the merchant's fine cloak was once, in some season, a beggar's shawl.
Upright meaning
- generosity
- giving and receiving
- support
- fair exchange
- resources circulating
The Six of Pentacles is money doing what money is for: moving. The merchant weighs coins in his scales and gives — and the card blesses both roles honestly. Upright, it marks generosity, patronage, the loan that arrives at the right hour, mentorship, the raise granted, aid flowing where it's needed. After the Four's grip and the Five's cold, the suit here discovers circulation: resources are healthiest in motion, and every giver was somewhere a receiver first. The scales matter as much as the coins — this is giving with judgment, sustainable because it is measured.
Reversed meaning
- strings attached
- one-sided giving
- charity as power
- debt dynamics
- receiving refused
Reversed, the flow bends around power. Gifts arrive with invoices attached — loyalty expected, gratitude performed on schedule; giving becomes a subscription to someone's dependence, or a way to stay safely above those helped. It can equally mark the receiving side's failure: help refused from pride, or debts of kindness tallied until they poison the kindness. The reflective question runs in both directions: in this exchange, who is kept where — and would the arrangement survive equality?
Six of Pentacles in Love
Upright: Love as fair exchange over time — support flowing to whoever currently needs it, both partners fluent in giving and receiving. The balance is seasonal, not transactional.
Reversed: Generosity keeping score, or one partner permanently cast as the helped one. Care that maintains a hierarchy isn't care; audit the ledger together.
Six of Pentacles in Career
Upright: Mentorship, sponsorship, the raise or funding that reflects real value — resources moving toward merit. Give the leg up you once needed; take the one offered.
Reversed: Favours functioning as leashes — the helpful senior who collects in influence. Take the help; decline the collar.
Six of Pentacles in Money
Upright: The circulation card — giving within your means, lending with clear terms, receiving without shame. Generosity as a line item, budgeted and real.
Reversed: Loans souring relationships, charity feeding the giver's image, or debt used as leverage. Put terms in writing; keep dignity in the deal.
Six of Pentacles in Health
Upright: Accepting care as readily as you provide it — energy, like money, circulating sustainably. Reflective only, not medical advice.
Reversed: The chronic giver's depletion — everyone's supporter, no one's patient. Receiving is part of the system. Reflective only, not medical advice.
Six of Pentacles in Spirituality
Upright: Generosity as practice — the open hand as a spiritual posture, tithed attention, service that expects nothing back.
Reversed: Giving to be seen giving — the donation as costume. The left hand should occasionally surprise the right.
Six of Pentacles in Shadow work
Upright: Examining your comfort in each role — giver and receiver — and practising the one that itches.
Reversed: The benefactor shadow: helping as a way to stay unhelpable, above, and owed. What would it mean to need someone?
As advice
Keep the coins moving. Give with scales — measured, sustainable, no strings — and receive with straight shoulders: circulation is one system, and you are allowed both ends of it.
Yes or No?
yes. The Six of Pentacles is a yes — support and fair exchange are available; give or ask, as the situation requires.
Card combinations
With the Five of Pentacles, the rescue in sequence — the cold season met by the open hand. With the Four of Pentacles, the alternative it corrects: grip versus flow. With The Empress, generosity at harvest scale — abundance that feeds without keeping accounts.
