Four of Pentacles Tarot Card Meaning
- Element:
- Earth
- Astrology:
- Sun in Capricorn
- Number:
- 4
Overview & symbolism
A crowned figure sits on a plain stone bench, a coin balanced on his crown, another hugged to his chest with both arms, one pinned beneath each foot — wealth deployed as armour on every chakra it can reach. Behind him, at his back, spreads the city: commerce, company, the entire world the coins were meant to buy access to. He has secured everything except a way to move.
Upright meaning
- security
- saving
- control
- holding on
- conservatism
The Four of Pentacles is security achieved and then squeezed. The figure has done everything the suit teaches — earned, saved, stabilised — and now sits crowned with one coin, hugging another, and standing on the last two. Upright, the card honestly credits the achievement: reserves are real, prudence works, and consolidation has its seasons. But the posture is the sermon: every limb is employed in holding, leaving no hand free for greeting, building, or receiving. What you grip this tightly also grips you — and the city where life happens is behind him, at his back.
Reversed meaning
- letting go
- generosity returning
- loss of control
- spending released
- grip examined
Reversed, the fingers loosen — by wisdom or by force. At best, generosity resumes: money moves, the crown-coin comes down, and the discovery lands that open hands are also a security system. At worst, control is stripped rather than surrendered — the loss the gripping was meant to prevent, arriving anyway. Either way the reflective question surfaces: what was the holding actually about? It is rarely the coins; it is usually the old fear underneath them.
Four of Pentacles in Love
Upright: Holding the relationship tightly — commitment shading into keeping, jealousy filed under devotion. Love needs at least one open hand to breathe.
Reversed: The grip easing — trust replacing surveillance — or the clutched bond slipping precisely because it was clutched. Openness is the repair.
Four of Pentacles in Career
Upright: Guarding position, knowledge, or territory — the safe role kept, the expertise hoarded. Secure, and quietly stagnant; nothing gripped can grow.
Reversed: Sharing the knowledge, delegating the control, risking the comfortable seat — movement returning to a career that had crossed its arms.
Four of Pentacles in Money
Upright: The saver's card at full strength — reserves built, spending controlled, security genuinely earned. Mind the line where prudence becomes hoarding that costs more than it protects.
Reversed: Money released — invested, given, spent on actual life — or control lost to forces the clutching never governed. Budget for generosity; it compounds too.
Four of Pentacles in Health
Upright: Holding tension as a lifestyle — the clenched jaw and guarded posture of permanent vigilance. The body pays storage fees. Reflective only, not medical advice.
Reversed: The exhale — releasing control enough to rest. Letting go is a motor skill; practise it. Reflective only, not medical advice.
Four of Pentacles in Spirituality
Upright: Clinging as the teacher — the practice of noticing what the hands (and identity) refuse to release.
Reversed: Non-attachment beginning where it counts: with something you actually value. Giving from surplus is arithmetic; giving from grip is growth.
Four of Pentacles in Shadow work
Upright: Meeting the hoarder honestly — the part that believes there will never be enough. Ask when it learned that.
Reversed: The controller shadow relaxing: discovering that what you release does not automatically abandon you.
As advice
Keep the reserves; free one hand. Decide what security is for — then spend, give, or risk a measured piece of it on the life it was supposed to fund.
Yes or No?
maybe. The Four of Pentacles is a cautious maybe — security favours you, but a grip this tight blocks the very flow a full yes requires.
Card combinations
With the Five of Pentacles, the feared next chapter — the fear driving the grip made visible; note the two are neighbours, not destiny. With the Six of Pentacles, the cure in card form: resources in circulation. With The Devil, holding hardened into bondage — audit what owns whom.
