The Devil and The Tower

In the Major Arcana's sequence, The Tower follows The Devil directly, and the order is the meaning: what The Devil binds, The Tower breaks. The Devil names the trap — addiction, obsession, a gilded cage, any arrangement maintained by avoidance. The Tower is the moment the arrangement fails: the intervention, the discovery, the collapse that makes continuing impossible.

This is the deck's liberation sequence, though it rarely feels like freedom while the masonry is falling. When the pair appears, an unhealthy attachment has reached its structural limit. The chains were always loose; now the wall they were bolted to is coming down. The work the combination asks of you is to stop rebuilding the prison out of habit once the dust settles.

A relationship dynamic built on dependency, secrecy, or control reaching its breaking point. The rupture — a confrontation, a discovery, an ultimatum — is the release. What follows depends on whether the bond had anything beneath the pattern; sometimes it does, and the rebuild is real.

The golden handcuffs snapping: a compromising situation, an unsustainable workload, or an ethically murky arrangement collapsing before you could exit gracefully. The exit is the point.

Both cards reversed soften the sequence into a private liberation: the trap is being dismantled quietly from within rather than blown open. Slower, gentler, same destination.

Identify The Devil's referent first — ask what in the querent's life fits "maintained but not chosen." The Tower then dates the timeline: challenge position means the break is in progress; future position, that it is coming and cooperation will soften it.
