Knight of Wands Tarot Card Meaning
- Element:
- Fire
- Astrology:
- Fire of Fire
- Number:
- 12
Overview & symbolism
An armoured rider in a salamander-covered surcoat sits a rearing golden horse, wand couched like a lance, plume and mane streaming like flame. The desert and distant pyramids repeat the Page's landscape — but the Page stood still, and the Knight is already moving. The rearing horse is the card's whole tension: power at the exact instant before direction.
Upright meaning
- bold action
- adventure
- charisma
- pursuit
- full commitment
The Knight of Wands is fire that has stopped exploring and started charging — the Page's spark strapped to a horse. Upright, this is the deck's most kinetic personality: bold, charismatic, allergic to hesitation, magnificent in pursuit. As energy, it favours the decisive move — relocating, launching, declaring, going. As a person, it is the one who makes things happen and rooms warmer, though rarely the one who files the paperwork afterward. When this Knight rides through a reading, the question is not whether to act but how to aim the acting.
Reversed meaning
- recklessness
- scattered momentum
- anger
- abandoned quests
- all heat no aim
Reversed, the horse bolts. Impulsiveness outruns judgment, passion flares into temper, quests get abandoned at the first unphotogenic mile. Or the reversal runs cold: fire frustrated, all that momentum idling in a life too small for it, leaking out as irritability. The reflective work is neither to shame the fire nor obey it, but to give it a worthy track — commitment is what converts heat into arrival.
Knight of Wands in Love
Upright: Passionate pursuit — grand gestures, magnetic attraction, a romance with real velocity. Thrilling; just notice whether the rider stays past the chase.
Reversed: Intensity that cools once the pursuit ends, or friction from a temper with a short fuse. Steadiness is the sequel passion has to want.
Knight of Wands in Career
Upright: The bold move — pitching the audacious idea, taking the leap role, being the momentum a stalled team needs. Fortune favours the one already in motion.
Reversed: Projects launched hot and left cold, or ambition churning without a track. Finish one charge before sounding the next.
Knight of Wands in Money
Upright: Confident, decisive moves — seizing a time-limited opportunity with commitment. Boldness pays when the aim precedes the spur.
Reversed: Impulsive bets and heroic spending. The horse should not hold the wallet.
Knight of Wands in Health
Upright: Vigour at full gallop — ambitious training, energy that wants big challenges. Reflective only, not medical advice.
Reversed: Overexertion and the injuries of impatience. Even fire trains on rest days. Reflective only, not medical advice.
Knight of Wands in Spirituality
Upright: The pilgrim's fire — pursuing the path with passion, willing to travel far for what feels true.
Reversed: Chasing intensity as if depth were a destination reached by speed. The still practice is the far country.
Knight of Wands in Shadow work
Upright: Befriending your own wildness — the part that wants to leap, own it before it drives.
Reversed: The runaway shadow: bolting from every situation that asks for staying power. What are you actually outrunning?
As advice
Charge — but pick the hill before you spur the horse. Your momentum is the asset; your follow-through is the multiplier. Commit to the whole ride.
Yes or No?
yes. The Knight of Wands is a bold yes — act decisively — with the caveat that the action needs an aim, not just heat.
Card combinations
With the Eight of Wands, maximum velocity — everything accelerates at once; steer early. With Temperance, the gallop finds a sustainable gait — passion with a governor. With the Queen of Wands, charisma meets mastery: fire that no longer needs to prove itself.
